Google Unveils Nexus One
Nexus
One Google phone is finally unveiled. The new handset reflects
Google's effort to expand advertising sales on mobile devices,
a market that may reach $2 - 3 billion by 2013, according
to Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.
The phone, designed with Taiwan's HTC Corp., will initially
cost $529 without a cellphone carrier's contract, or $179
with a two-year contract with T-Mobile. The company said it
expects other U.S. carriers to offer the phone soon.
The Google phone is equipped with a five-megapixel camera
and a flash for taking shots in low light. It weighs 0.3 lbs
and is 0.5 inch thick, about the same as the iPhone. Its 3.7-inch
screen is larger than its rival.
Other flashy new Nexus One features include a light sensor,
designed to detect how bright an environment is; the device
adjusts its screen brightness accordingly, in an effort to
save battery life. The device also features noise-cancelling
technology, an effort to make the phone easier to use in noisy
areas.
Nexus One has a nice display screen. Like other Android phones,
apps should be stored on the internal memory. It's missing
some wanted features like multitouch support, dual-mode capability
for GSM and CDMA networks, and native tethering.
Some analysts say Nexus One is a Droid killer rather than
an iPhone killer.
