A Review of the Types of Cell Phone Batteries

There are many different products on the market for your cell phone.  In this regard, if you are in the market for different products associated with your cell phone -- including cell phone batteries -- it is important for you to do a bit of homework on your own.  By doing your homework, by researching cell phone products, including cell phone batteries, on your own, you will be able to determine which products best meet your needs, which cell phone batteries will best serve your interests.

Through this article you will be provided with some basic information about the different types of cell phone batteries that are available to you today.  There are three primary types of cell phone batteries that widely are in use today:

  • nickel cadmium batteries
  • nickel metal hydride batteries
  • lithium ion batteries

Each of these major types of cell phone batteries will be discussed individually in this article.

Nickel Cadmium Cell Phone Batteries

Nickel cadmium batteries are the oldest type of cell phone batteries in use.  They can perform very well.  However, in order for these cell phone batteries to be used for an extended period of time, you have to make certain that you only recharge these cell phone batteries after they have been fully discharged.  If you fail to allow your cell phone batteries to fully discharge, you will reduce the percentage of the battery that will be useful in the future.  Your batteries will have memory problems.  It simply cannot be fully recharged in the future.

Nickel Metal Hydride Cell Phone Batteries

These types of batteries actually last longer after each recharge than do nickel cadmium batteries for your cell phone.  These batteries still suffer from the memory effect, however.  But, these types of cell phone batteries suffer from the memory effect to a lesser degree than the nickel cadmium cell phone batteries.  You need to let these types of batteries fully discharge at least every four recharges and you need to be good about taking these types of cell phone batteries off of the charger when the charging process is complete.

Lithium Ion Cell Phone Batteries

These types of cell phone batteries are the latest types of power sources for cell phone units today.  These types of cell phone batteries offer better overall performance than do the other two batteries discussed in this article.  These cell phone batteries can be damaged by overcharging in some instances.  However, these cell phone batteries do not suffer from the memory effect.

In the end, you need to closely consider how you intend to use your cell phone, your budget and other considerations as you go about choosing a cell phone battery that will be right for you.  In other words, you need to take the purchase of a cell phone battery seriously.
