Understanding Wireless Phone Technology:  EvDO

In working at selecting the proper wireless phone for your use, it doesn’t hurt to have at least some appreciation of the underlying technological aspects of a particular wireless phone and of particular wireless phone features.  Of course, you don’t need to have an expert’s knowledge of wireless phone technology; however, the basic information about the technological aspects of a wireless phone can be helpful to you.

Through this brief article, you are provided with some very basic information about one aspect of wireless phone technology:  EvDO.  If you find that you have additional questions or desire additional information about EvDO or about any other aspect of cell phone technology after reading and reviewing this article, you should contact a reliable and experienced professional in the field who can provide you with additional materials.

The Technical Definition of EvDO

In many instances, when it comes to trying to get a better understanding of technology and technological developments, the best place to start is with the technical definition.  This holds true even when the technical definition of a particular technological development is complicated or difficult to understand, as can be the case from time to time when it comes to wireless phone technology.

In any case, in any event, the technical definition of EvDO that is widely employed and utilized today is:

“Evolution Data Only - Evolution Data Optimized, often abbreviated as EVDO, EV-DO, EvDO, 1xEV-DO or 1xEvDO is a wireless radio broadband data protocol being adopted by many CDMA wireless phone providers in Japan, Korea, Israel, the United States, and Canada as part of the CDMA2000 standard. 1xEVDO is pronounced ‘One Ex-E:- Vee-Dee-Oh.’ It is commonly referred in the industry as DO (Dee-Oh)”

A Better Picture of EvDO

CDMA is a wireless radio protocol, a broadband wireless data protocol, that is being adopted by different wireless phone providers.  CDMA is a newer wireless radio protocol that is being utilized by more and more wireless phone service providers in certain countries the world over.

EvDO is the protocol that is utilized to actually make the data transmissions to and from wireless phone units.  It is proving to be an efficient protocol for transmitting data to and from wireless phone units.

EvDO and Wireless Phones:  It’s a Geographic Thing

In fact, EvDo is not being utilized the world over.  In fact, EvDo is being developed in utilized in a handful of countries around the world.  The countries in which the EvDo protocol is being advanced and utilized today are:

Japan
Korea
Israel
Canada
United States

Interestingly, Europe is not adopting this protocol.  The wireless phone service providers in Europe are using other protocols for wireless phone data transmissions.  Most experts believe that European wireless service providers likely will not heavily use the EvDo wireless phone data transmission protocol at any time in the immediate future.
