Understanding Mobile Phone Technology:  IDEN

As you go about selecting the proper mobile phone to meet your goals and objectives, it doesn’t hurt to have at least a basic understanding of the various technological aspects of a particular mobile phone product and or particular mobile phone features.  Additionally, you will want a working understanding of different mobile phone services.  You don’t need to have an expert’s knowledge of mobile phone technology; however, the basic information about the technological aspects of a mobile phone will serve you well.

Through this article, you are provided with some very basic information about one aspect of mobile phone technology -- specifically that of IDEN.  If you have additional questions or desire additional information about IDEN after reading this article (or about any other aspect of mobile phone technology) you should contact a reliable and experienced professional in the field who can provide you with additional materials about mobile phone technology and related issues.

What Does IDEN Stand For?

IDEN is the abbreviated form for Integrated Digital Enhanced Network.

The Technical Definition of IDEN

When trying to consider and understand technology relating to mobile phone units, mobile phone products and mobile phone services, it usually is a good idea of at least having some sort of idea about the technical definition involved in such matters.  The same holds true when it comes to a discussion of Integrated Digital Enhanced Network or IDEN.

The generally accepted technical definition of IDEN is:

“A Motorola Inc. enhanced specialized mobile radio network technology that combines two-way radio, telephone, text messaging and data transmission into one network.”

A Common Definition of IDEN

IDEN is a standard or system through which a mobile phone user can transmit telephonic communications, two-way radio, text messaging and other data transmission to and from a mobile phone unit … a Motorola mobile phone unit.  IDEN is associated only with Motorola products and is not supported by the mobile phone products created and produced by any other manufacturer.

IDEN uses what is known as a TDMA air interface.  Its use has not been significant when considering the market as a whole.  Moreover, many experts in the field of mobile phone technology maintain that IDEN has not been a successful cellular or mobile phone standard.

The Future of IDEN

Generally, experts and analysts who pay close attention to the mobile phone industry and to mobile phone technology maintain that the future of IDEN is not particularly bright.  It is not in wide use today -- again, it is restricted only to Motorola mobile phone products.  Moreover, the use of IDEN simply has not caught on with consumers and (as has been stated previously) with any other manufacturer.  In short, most industry analysts and experts believe that IDEN will go the way of some other mobile phone technologies that never gained a significant foothold in the marketplace.
